Still I Rise: A Cartoon History of African Americans
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (October, 1997)
Authors: Taneshia Nash Laird, Elihu Bey, Roland Owen, Jr. Laird, and Charles Johnson
Average review score:

Great for Alternative Instruction
This is a wonderful book. I've found it very useful in my classroom as a teacher of Juvenile Delinquents who dropped out of school. At first sight of the book my students think it's a joke, but I find it as effective as other text boks when teching History. It's FUN and DIFFERENT. A change in the admission of information is very helpful and effective in the acquisition of information in youths.

Great Read
Very unique presentation of African American history. Basically use two elderly narrators, one male and one female to take the reader in time. Each narrator has a different "voice". The female narrator has a bit of black nationalism, while the male narrator has a more balanced view of America in terms of race relations. Though a cartoon narrative, the book seems to be written for older readers (teenagers to adults). I recommend it for the entire family *and* ALL RACES. As author Russell Banks (Rule of the Bone) says on the back of STILL I RISE, "It's not just the history of African-Americans; it's the African-American history of *all* Americans."

Storm Boy

Author: Paul Owen Lewis
Average review score:

A classic, beautiful book
People will be framing the artwork from this book fifty years from now. And it's one of my son's favorite books. Great for reading aloud, one of the books you keep reaching for. A classic story, well told and beautifully rendered with images that are faithful to the actual traditions and styles of the Haida and Tlingit people. So it's not just "mind candy" -- it's an introduction to a culture.

I simply fell in love with the artwork and its young hero.
Paul O. Lewis does a great service to children by using a scholarly approach to his young hero. Giving us not only rich and evocative artwork but portraying the ancient tale of the mythic hero with fresh and innocent eyes is a wonderful gift. Readers seeking the beauty of a children's book that provides an uplifting experience and faithful cultural feeling will fall in love with this book just as I have. -V.S.

Excellent Book. Well written and easily understood.

Within weeks the reader can master the most challenging C++ algorithms. I refer to this book as the C++ bible. Definately worth the investment!

Wine, Beer, and Spirits: The Concise Guide
Published in Paperback by Copacetic Pubns (January, 1997)
Author: Thomas Owen
Average review score:

This book totally helped me understand wine.
I can really help people make decisions with choosing a wine now

Jam-packed with pertinent, high-quality information
Wow! I work in the restuarant business and this book is a Godsend! Never again will I be confused or intimidated by a guest's wine order. All I have to do is quickly look up what they order (which is easy because the book fits right in my apron), and return to the table with the wine and all sorts of fun information. For example, just the other night someone ordered a Sancerre from me priced at $38. While I was waiting for the wine from the bartender, I looked up Sancerre and discovered that it was a 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley in France. I read a couple other things about the Loire Valley and returned to the table and totally impressed my guests! It was so much fun! I recommend this book to any fellow server who deals with a nice wine list. It has really made my job a lot easier and a lot more profitable! Honest!

Women Celebrating Life; A Guide to Growth and Transformation
Published in Paperback by Llewellyn Publications (01 July, 2000)

Turning Lemons Into Lemonade
When I turned 50 I was feeling pretty blue. A friend pointed me to Women Celebrating Life as a way to uplift myself. I tried the ceremony for the fiftieth birthday and then the one titled Forgiving Mother. Wow! I didn't know how much "stuff" I had stored away. I feel relieved of a lot of animosity now. I would recommend this book to any woman who wants to release negative feelings associated with growing older and other life situations. As the author intended, the book helps to turn lemons into lemonade. I plan to buy some more books for Christmas presents.

AN EASY TO USE GUIDE FOR RECLAIMING YOUR PERSONAL POWER
Women Celebrating Life is a must have book for all women to keep on their bookshelves throughout their lives. It spans a lifetime, covering the same things we all go through; from puberty to birthdays to marriage to babies to deaths and everything else in between. Simple ceremonies are included for these stages of life which encourage self recognition, understanding of others, and self empowerment through forgiveness or celebration. The ceremonies bring self assurance to girls at puberty, grand ceremony to landmark birthdays, and comfort through divorce and death. It's not a book you have to sit down and read at one time, you can simply refer to the chapters as the occurances in your life arise. I turn 50 in two months and am eagerly awaiting to celebrate this half century mark in ceremony with my friends and family. The book will also make a great gift to give my women friends and nieces.

1001 Things to Spot Long Ago (1001 Things to Spot)
Published in Paperback by Usborne Pub Ltd (December, 1999)
Authors: Gillian Doherty, Teri Gower, and Susannah Owen
Average review score:

Better than "I Spy"
This is a great book. It's much like the better know "Great City Search" and "Great Animal Search" books published by Usborne, but it is a bit easier for younger kids (my 3-year-old had no problems). The illustrations are very attractive, and many of the items were challenging for my 5-year-olds as well. Since you're looking for more than one of most items, the book is a nice counting exercise. Perhaps most importantly, kids can do it on their own because the numeral is next to the picture of the item they're supposed to find.

50 Hikes in Alaska's Chugach State Park
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (April, 2001)
Authors: Shane Shepherd and Owen Wozniak
Average review score:

Take a hike! ...after you buy this book.
As a former long-time Anchorage resident, I can say that this is a well-written, informative guide for people of all skills. Whether you are local or visiting, there are maps, directions, and a condensed, detailed write-up, without excess fat.

The climbs range from the recreational family journeys to the hardcore hikes. The authors obviously have spent much time on each of these trails.

There is even a nice touch of history in the guide.. you can tell there was good research done off the trails too.

The black & white photos are there but can't do the land justice. Get out and go.
